Melanie’s Place

This project was completed in August of 2005. The backyard of this residence is an imposing hillside, sloping toward the back of the house.

This presented a challenge that would be problematic and perhaps intimidating for less creative landscapers.

We decided to use it to our advantage, and install a waterfall and stream into the hillside, to take advantage of the excellent visual prominence of the stream flowing toward the house.

In the base of the hill, we carved out a semi-circle, and built a retaining wall out of a mixture of Chilton Outcroppings, both “Weathered Edge” (for color and interest) and regular, as well as a mixture of fieldstone boulders of a variety of sizes and shapes.

A flagstone patio forms the surface at the base of the wall, extending between retaining wall/outcropping and the rear wall of the house itself. The stream completes its journey with a three foot high drop into a reservoir encompassed and encircled by the patio itself.

The planting on this project was completed in the spring of 2006. This project is one of our favorites. The combination of materials and elements is very attractive, and a feast for the senses.

The sound of the moving water resonates in the newly constructed family room with all the new windows, and through the rest of the house as well. The patio is like a backyard sanctuary, a small amphitheatre carved into the hillside, very protected and private, very inviting.
